Progress report:

Step: Installed. Going to need another piece of flagstone but it's looking good. In case of tornado, hide under it...it's going nowhere. Steve, prepare to do some REALLY big adjustments!

Patio: Coming along. Ian is perplexed that the smores aren't ready...but, I shall build no fire before it's time.

I think we'll have this finished before the five year anniversary of acquiring the bricks. Linus, on the other hand, wonders what's become of the world's largest litter box.

The fire pit ended up a wee bit deeper than I pictured it in my mind. It will be known as "The Fire Pit of Doom."

Okay, so it's not actually done...but still, we're getting there. Somebody find those buffalo/jalepeno brats for the grill. Kimberly's already purchased the smore supplies.

Note: Don't smash your finger between a hammer and a brick. It (the finger, not the brick) swells to about the size of a volleyball and turns Milford Purple.

Four new little ones

So, Heidi has been feeling a little "large" lately.

"Does this porch make me look fat?"

Elise went out bright and early, as always, to feed Heidi and Linus. To her great surprise, Heidi was having her kitties right on the table in the garage!

Elise and Mom ran quick and got a blanket and a box and put Heidi and the two new kitties in the kennel.

By the end of the day there were four brand new kitties.

Three of them look just like Sylvester. The fourth looks just like Heidi, but with gray patches instead of black.

The Wiener Dog is curious, but approving. Heidi is less than eager to let the Wiener Dog show his affection for the little ones.

You had better come out and see them!

Sup, Caleb? Today's ride was conducted in your honor. 50 miles of wet, cold gravel so I could get these pictures for you:

This road seemed like just as bad an idea when I reached the other end as it looked from here.

The Lemond will never be the same...what are those crunchy noises coming out of the drivetrain?

Last weekend was much nicer. 45 miles on the road bike to Crete and back...toasty warm, a rest stop to watch the Doane track meet...delicious turkey and havarti sandwich. Let's get back to that weather, shall we?

Race Report: Psycowpath 1

Race #1 for the season: Psycowpath Maskenthine--near Norfolk, NE. Nice cool day with a wind that just kept on giving. Gusting strong in the early races...got much stronger as the day progressed.

First race of the year, so had no idea what class to ride in. Thought I'd try my age group to see how the fitness was progressing. Rolling the singlespeed El Mariachi, 32X17; new Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.4's.

Norfolk is a lot further than I thought. The extra stop to buy McD's sausage bisquits for Ian nearly cost me. Signed in at the last possible second and headed straight for the start line. No warm up at all. Checked with Millhouse, who was actually disciplined enough to show up on time and preride. Thanks for the pointers, pal.

Typically these things are just anaerobic from the gun. Open class got about a minute head start then they sent the age groupers off. I just stood up and pedaled hard on the long gravel climb to the singletrack. Kept waiting to get passed by the guys with gears...nothing. Half-way up the climb I took a look around and saw I had a big gap. Huh, that's different. Kept hammering and got a clean shot into the singletrack.

First technical section by the creek was pretty soft, but really fun. A few logs to hop, some nice ups and downs, and a rocky little stream crossing. Started catching open class riders in this section, many of whom were walking the stream crossing. Rang the little brass bell (I love that thing!) and squeezed by, riding all the way through.

On the first open section I was catching a lot of riders. Found my good friend Millhouse looking good in his first race on that Red Salsa El Mar...felt a few pangs of jealousy as Ian tells me Justin's bike looks way better than mine. Dang.

Out in the open

Right before the trail re-enters the trees I caught the last of the open class racers. Passed the last four on the hill into the trees. I assumed I'd just swap the lead with them for a while, take a breather and gather myself. Again, looked back and found a gap. Decided to just press the advantage and see who followed. To my surprise, they just let me ride away.

Pushed the rest of lap one pretty hard hoping to get a nice solid lead going and discourage the chasers. Out of the technical section the second time, Ian was waiting with the camera. He must have run four miles to get all the great shots he captured. He told me I had a one minute lead on the second place rider. The open section with all the switchbacks lets you get a good view of those chasing you. By the end of the section I could see that my lead was holding steady. Decided to throttle back a ways in case I needed something at the end.

Ended up stretching the lead out and winning by about three minutes.

Conclusion #1: The last month of pain and suffering at the hands of sadistic spin instructors really paid off. I was so much stronger than in race one last year. Conclusion #2: I've got a long ways to go to be in position to succeed at Laramie. Conclusion #3: Great equipment set-up, mostly. I love that Salsa...only got to race the rigid fork once last year and got worked over pretty good. Much better this time. Singlespeed hurts...but it's a good hurt. Used an H2O bottle instead of pack...jury still out...much easier to grab the tube and gulp than to wait for a convenient place to hydrate. Tires: fabulous...trail condition were about perfect, but these are definitely the race tires for me this season.

Musings of an angry dog

I seem to be home alone...a lot. Those kids and their sports mean I get stuck in a kennel way more than a wiener dog should. But I'll have my revenge...they'll find it in the most surprising places.

The basement: Progressing

The peeps: A birthday party at the big park can't be bad.

Tate: gotta love that tunnel, eh pal? Don't worry, little dude. The swelling in uncle Robb's lip is almost gone now.

The volume: Way too loud...isn't there an instrument that can be played in silence?

The games: Elise's serve is feared far and wide. Ian's 'D' is not something you want a part of...he gets five fouls and they don't carry over to the next game...just hand him the ball and no one gets hurt.

The Wiener Dog is going into serious hibernation mode...this cold is just not right

We've been a bit lazy, but slowly getting a few things done. Bought the giant TV...now just need to get in gear so there is somewhere to watch it.

Had a smallish run-in with an unwelcome guest the other night. Turns out, possums don't really fear the wiener dog. They're not that impressed with slingshots, either.

The Wiener dog recognizes that he's carrying the dreams of so many on his slim (yet handsome) shoulders. So, for his lax posting, he apologizes. Sometimes inspiration comes easy...sometimes, not so much.

Is my life exciting? Not at all. It's hard to maintain that rugged, tough-guy image that I value so much, when Tigger is constantly posing me with flowers.

The volleyball must be taking it's toll on Elise. Here's how we found her spending her Saturday:

I think she was worried about a swarm of rogue killer bees.

Ian's football season is over...a pretty fair year, all told. Played nearly every down on both sides of the ball. When you lead the team in tackles from the safety position, that doesn't bode well. Still, scored a few touchdowns, recovered some fumbles...not bad. Thing is, when you're a football star, the women just won't leave you alone.

I know that I'm a bad, bad dog...I'll try to do better on my posting...promise.

'Sup, y'all? The wiener dog has settled into a routine. It's eat, sleep, chase the cat, repeat. Exciting? Perhaps not, but it's how I roll.

Is it possible that I've got still more cousins? They just keep coming! Here's the latest three on the list:

The wiener dog was left home again to hang with his brother, Roscoe. Are my feelings hurt? A little. But, I'm always up for hangin' with my bro.

Tomorrow's a party for the Tigger's Bday. I'm hoping that the girls will drop lots of pizza, popcorn, etc. on the ground. I'm just the dog to clean it up.

The update

Did the Wiener Dog bite off more than he can chew with this blogging thing? Probably! How about weekly-ish updates?

Last week was the big cousins trip to KC!

Not all the big cousins went to Worlds O' Fun (Anna, you know who you are!).

Chicken boats are the right way to start off a WOF day.

Meredith and Tigger got to meet a celebrity...no autographs, please!

"B" shot everyone...but only because they deserved it.

Babs, Tigger and Ian were keen to try the "Ripcord".

Then they got a closer look at how tall it really is!

Once they got to the top, it was all downhill from there...and then back up...and then back down...

It was a long, hot day...but we tried to keep a happy face on...

The next night Alex and Anne and Uncle Lee came to visit at the Great Wolf Lodge. Ian talked some smack and then beat the golf pro at his own game. You won't live that down any time soon, Alex!

Being left at home wasn't easy on the Wiener Dog ego. Still, I got to hang with my bro, Roscoe...so it's all good.

Back in the saddle...

You people have no idea of the kind of pressure I'm under...squirrels to chase, cats to intimidate, a Golden Retriever's bed to steal...And yet, I'm supposed to churn out pithy, witty, human-oriented humor 24/7...it's just too much to ask.

Still, I've been a bit remiss (okay, a lot remiss).

What's new for the Wiener Dog?

Remodel:

The Papa came out and framed in the fireplace. The Dad remembered his old jigsaw puzzle days and slapped some drywall on it...a little tape and a lot of mud can cover up those unsightly gaps!

Outside:

The weather's too nice for a dog to be confined. So, outside we went to work on the landscaping. Only the afficianado's will even notice the difference...still the grass never would grow under that tree (and no, it's not my fault).

Husker State Games:

Just when I think sports season is over and I won't be dragged to anymore hot weather events, it's bike race time again.

Who's more tired...Ian or me?!

Not a bad day's racing...two silvers. Have to leave something to strive for, right?

The race was not without it's attractions for the wiener dog. I met a new friend, Keila.

She's a long hair (no, not a hippy...a long-haired dachsund). We share a birthday even. Go figure.

Just because we're friends doesn't mean we agree on everything:

A guy's got to stand up for what he believes in, right?

Well, it's the big KC weekend. I think I'll be hangin' with my bro, Roscoe...good times, I'm sure. Ride the Mamba for me, little World's o' Fun peeps!

I'm a simple dog. I don't ask for much. Three square meals a day...a sneaker to chew on...trips outside to...well, you know...

It's a pretty nice life I've carved out for myself. And yet, the humans just can't leave well enough alone.

Here's what I mean:

That's right...it's a CAT! A cat, I say!!

Want to know how I feel about cats? I'd rather stand on the unstable arm of a moving porch swing than share my space with a cat!

It seems that everyone is calling it "hey, kitty"...I suppose if it's going to stay it should have a name. It keeps hiding from us, so the leading candidate for names is "Heidi." Please put your votes in the comments section and let me know what you think.

In a futile gesture to make up for the indignity, my brother, Roscoe, got to come over and play today. As Tate might say, "I bite you!"...

If that wasn't the biggest day ever...

Started out at the pond where I was unceremoniously dumped into the lake. Is this supposed to be fun? Can I swim? Yes I can. Do I want to swim? No I do not. If that isn't bad enough, I'll never get all the sand out!

Then, it's off to Uncle David's for his renown fireworks display. Can there be anything better than 9 kids all leaving plates of food and cold drinks sitting on the ground?

Let's see...did we cover all the 4th of July bases?

Rocket's red glare...check.

All in all, a good day...but I'm dog-tired.

A pink font, you ask. I'm a dawg that's secure in my masculinity.

I think that Sage is warming up to me finally. Or, if not warming up, at least tolerating me. We spend a lot of time just hangin' out...you wouldn't understand; you're not a dog.

Elise and I had a lot of chores today...cleaning this and that. I'm telling you, it just wears a dog out. So, she watched Little House on the Prairie tonight while I took a well-deserved nap.

Oh, and by the way, the first person who makes a joke about "the hot dog in a bun," or anything to that effect, gets bit.

I'm working on my stair skills. Seems like going up is much easier than going down. Of course, you try jumping off of something taller than you and landing on a skinny ledge. Not so funny, eh?

Ian gets back from camp tomorrow...I'm thinking that the action quotient may go way up.

Well, I think that's it for tonight. Could I type more? Yes I could. But, I want to leave you in suspense...can't spend all my creative energy in one mad typing frenzy, now can I?

Power tools and puppies don't mix

So, tonight the Papa came out to help work on the basement...'bout time to get that going again.

It looks good, but routers and puppies are a bad combination. I'm not going to have power-tool-ear when I'm an old dog, so I hung out upstairs.

It only took about five hours to put the counter tops on (that's 4 months in dog years). Of course, the 45 minute pancake break may have drug out the process some. Still, they look pretty snazzy. So, a big old "Thanks" to the Papa/Dad/Tom.

And now, a brief word from Sage:

"Do I like this new dog? Not so much. Can I do anything about it? Not so much. So, my new motto is: 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

So, this is what my life has settled into...boring!

Spent some time chillin' with the boyz...watching a little CWS...Tarheels fall short again. Ding.

The Tigger needs some love too, and I'm just one to deliver...

The Boy is off to camp this week...will things be quieter? Yes they will. Will they be even more boring? Yes they will. Good thing I have a tail to chase around the house.

Oh, speaking of problems (I was, wasn't I?), having a slight issue with the whole potty training thing. Ya Ya...Coco...Tater...any advice?

More baseball. Seriously?

So, we get a call this morning bright and early. We ignore it, cause we're sleeping.

Then, the ominous knock on the door...

It's not a burgalar, it's a baseball coach. The team that beat us last night is disqualified! They had Roger Clemens pitching as closer for them...apparently he wasn't really on the team.

So, jump in the truck and race to another game.

Hotter than the blazes!! We won the first game...banged out a bunch of hits, etc. etc. Second game, even hotter!! Had chances to score but couldn't pull through. Oh well, we can finally go home. I think it's nap time...it's too hard to sleep at a game with everyone cheering so loudly.

What a day...met the whole family at Meredith's birthday party. And what a party it was!

Here's a shout-out to my cousin, Meredith...happy birthday!!

What a loud bunch of relatives! I'm pretty sure that Mozart has it in for me!

Got in a baseball game tonight too. Ian's team lost, but put up a valiant fight. Ian had a good game behind the plate, keying several outs. Only got one at-bat...drew a walk, stole two bases and scored a run that keyed a late rally.

Nice to have my sister, Elise, home from hangin' with her peeps in the city.

Frankly, I'm exhausted. So, for now...peace. out.
